PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY SERIES

Paleopathology:
A 20,000-Skeleton Perspective

Dorsal view of hand of a 54 year old Ohio male who died at the early part of this century (from the Todd collection). Subchondral erosions at the proximal interphalangeal joints are quite prominent and characteristic of spondyloarthropathy. Equally characteristic is the fusion wrist. Calcification ofligamentous structures, maintaining anatomic relationships helps to distinguish this phenomenon from infectious arthritis.
