The Art of Pingasugruk

A historic-era set of incised ivory mittens (each about 3.5 cm long) and ivory tube that, bound together with a heavy thong loop, formed the toggle handle (with mittens pinned back to back) and thong-guide to a drag handle for hauling harpooned seals homeward across the sea ice.  The tube’s dot-and-circle motif is typical of nineteenth-century incising.
