Angkor Wat and the
Angkor Archaeological District
by P. Bion Griffin, PhD

The Angkor image set focuses on Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world, and on temples now
maintained by Cambodian authorities for visitors. The Angkorian Capital Region might be another way to characterize the
selection, since Angkor was the capital of the entire empire during the Classic Period, that time of greatest achievements of the
Khmer people in terms of territory controlled, sophistication of the subsistence system, monumental architecture, and the visual arts.
The civilization at Angkor is traditionally dated from AD 802 until AD 1432.
